Weekend Overnight Counselor

Location: West Hempstead, NY | Schedule: PT Saturday & Sunday, 12:00 AM-8:00 AM | Status: Non-Exempt |Salary Range: $20.35/hour

The Opportunity

The Overnight Awake Residential Counselor is responsible for maintaining a safe, structured, and therapeutic environment during overnight hours in an OMH-licensed Children's Community Residence. This role provides continuous awake supervision, ensures resident safety and well-being, responds to crises and emergencies, and completes required documentation in accordance with agency and regulatory standards. The position also supports continuity of care between evening and morning shifts.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain continuous awake supervision of residents throughout the overnight shift.
  • Conduct scheduled and as-needed bed checks to ensure resident safety and well-being.
  • Monitor for safety risks including elopement, self-harm, medical concerns, and behavioral escalation.
  • Ensure all residents are accounted for and compliant with overnight expectations.
  • Respond immediately to emergencies, crises, and incident situations.
  • Use trauma-informed and de-escalation techniques to support residents overnight.
  • Provide emotional support and reassurance to residents as needed.
  • Follow emergency protocols, including contacting on-call staff, supervisors, 911, or mobile crisis when indicated.
  • Ensure resident safety until appropriate supports are in place.
  • Observe, document, and report any behavioral, medical, or medication-related concerns.
  • Support medication procedures per agency policy (including overnight administration when applicable).
  • Complete timely and accurate documentation (logs, bed checks, incident reports, progress notes as required).
  • Communicate relevant information during shift handoff to incoming staff.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and secure environment throughout the overnight shift.
  • Support residents who wake overnight with appropriate supervision, redirection, and support.
  • Assist with nighttime routines and early morning wake-ups as assigned.
  • Conduct required safety checks, including fire safety and emergency preparedness procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with OMH regulations, agency policies, and facility procedures.
  • Collaborate and communicate with on-call, clinical, and residential staff as needed.
  • Report significant observations that may impact treatment planning or resident safety.
  • Transport residents in agency vehicles when required.
  • Participate in mandatory trainings, meetings, and supervision.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION:

  • High School diploma or GED with 5 years' experience in human services related field
  • Associate's degree in in human services related field and 3 years related experience
  • Bachelor's degree in human services related field. Bachelor's degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience in community residence setting preferred.
  • Experience working with youth with SED preferred.
  • Valid New York State driving license with a safe and responsible driving history. Active defensive driving certificate of completion. Ability to drive the agency van.
