Family Peer Advocate - Clinical

Location: Hicksville, NY | Schedule: Full Time, 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday| Status: Non-Exempt |Salary Range: $22-$26/hour

The Opportunity

Family and Children’s Association (FCA) is seeking a Family Peer Advocate to assist families across Long Island with children ages 5-21 facing behavioral health challenges. The Advocate will build supportive partnerships with families, using personal experience to help them navigate services and empower their child’s success. The role focuses on engaging, supporting, and empowering families to regain control of their lives and recovery while serving as a role model throughout the treatment process.

Responsibilities

  • Provide in-office and community-based services to individuals and their families/caregivers, utilizing motivational interviewing and active listening techniques.
  • Support families in developing effective parenting skills and securing community resources through advocacy and guidance.
  • Participate in required training, meetings, and supervision to maintain professional growth and compliance.
  • Ensure accurate documentation by completing necessary paperwork and maintaining detailed progress notes within the electronic health record system.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to plan and facilitate family engagement workshops, and participate in case conferences to address treatment objectives.
  • Assist clients in developing crisis management plans and identifying natural supports to enhance their well-being.
  • Educate clients on their rights and empower them with advocacy skills to navigate mental health systems effectively.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; college degree preferred.
  • Must obtain provisional certification within the first 6 months of employment and the professional credential within 18 months or request an extension if additional time is needed.
  • Must have lived experience as a parent or primary caregiver of a child or youth with a social, emotional, behavioral, mental health, substance use disorder, or developmental disability.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of community resources, mental health diagnoses and symptoms, as well as suicide prevention and assessment.
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
  • Valid New York State driver’s license with a clean driving record.
