Family Peer Advocate - Children's Mental Health & Wellness

Location: Garden City, NY | Schedule: Full Time, 35 hours per week | Status: Non-Exempt |Salary Range: $42,000/annually

The Opportunity

Family and Children’s Association (FCA) is seeking a compassionate and motivated Family Peer Advocate to join the Nassau Family Center Program. This role involves providing client-centered support to families residing in Nassau County with children ages 5–18 who have been diagnosed with, or are at risk of being diagnosed with, a Serious Emotional Disturbance (SED). The Family Peer Advocate will collaborate closely with families to develop individualized support plans that recognize and build upon their unique strengths, empowering them to effectively care for and advocate on behalf of their child.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct home and community-based visits to educate families on effective parenting techniques and enhance their self-advocacy skills.
  • Provide ongoing support through monthly phone outreach to waitlisted families, engaging them in services prior to formal enrollment.
  • Respond to immediate needs by offering support and resources to individuals who contact or visit the program seeking assistance.
  • Assist families in accessing and navigating community resources to build and strengthen their support networks.
  • Facilitate support groups, family engagement activities, and networking opportunities to promote connection and empowerment among clients.
  • Complete all required documentation—including development and safety plans, session notes, and discharge plans—in compliance with agency and funding guidelines and within designated timeframes, while collaborating with Case Managers on shared cases to ensure coordinated service delivery.

Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Candidates must have lived experience as the parent or primary caregiver (biological, foster, or adoptive) of a child or youth with social, emotional, behavioral, mental health, or developmental challenges.
  • Provisional Family Peer Advocate Certification must be obtained within six months of hire, with Professional Certification required within 18 months; extensions may be requested if necessary.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (including Outlook and Word), with the ability to quickly learn and utilize program-specific software.
  • A valid and clean New York State driver’s license is required.
